More than one source.
The directory combines 50,514 Food Standards Agency/FHIS records with 45,474 named pubs, bars and beer gardens from the full UK OpenStreetMap extract. Names, source identifiers, postcodes and mapped locations are used to match venues before adding missing places. This catches public taprooms and bars that the register classifies as manufacturers, restaurants or other businesses. The inclusion rules also cover mapped cafés and restaurants explicitly tagged as having a bar or microbrewery, supported public hotel bars, and venues in current operator location directories. A restaurant or hotel is not added merely because it sells alcohol.
The current release has 23,895 listings with practical details or individual notes, including 14,035 mapped website links and 7,694 mapped opening schedules. Within this total, 46 venues have operator pages checked individually. These are factual directory records, not 69,917 personal recommendations.

All land-based reporting authorities with category records are represented. The separate Hull and Goole Port health authority returned no records in this category. Northern Ireland is included; the Republic of Ireland, Channel Islands and Isle of Man are outside this UK edition.
The latest coverage audit.
The November 2026 expansion cross-checked complete Lounges and Cosy Club operator location lists, excluding advertised future openings, and re-examined mapped café/restaurant bars. Separate local and national checks cover public hotel bars and brewery taprooms. Current release: 928 additional venue listings and 321 listings linked to operator directories. Matches use venue identity, location and source links; shared postcodes alone do not merge venues. Unresolved identity conflicts are held for review.
What the labels mean.
Directory record means a name and location with a source link. With mapped details adds community-maintained information such as a website, telephone number, hours or facilities. Operator directory means a venue is listed in its operator’s current published location index, with the source linked. Operator details checked means we checked the linked venue pages on the stated date. Pub Book notes identifies our 216 original researched entries and their longer individual descriptions. None of these labels implies a personal visit.
Coverage is national; records can still have gaps.
This is not a guarantee that every trading pub is listed or currently open. A public hotel bar may have a different business classification, registrations can change, and council updates may lag a closure or a new name. Some records lack a postcode or coordinates; we retain them with the address information supplied. No meal service, dog policy, accessibility or opening hours are inferred from registration.
The source category includes some nightclubs and members’ clubs. Names or explicit source access tags that indicate these are labelled for an admission check; other restrictions may not be obvious. Wheelchair access marked “limited” is shown with its qualification and is not included in the full wheelchair-access filter. Dogs allowed on leads are shown with that condition. Blank source fields stay unknown, never “no”. Filters narrow to recorded facilities and may omit venues whose details are missing.
Searching by postcode.
A full postcode normally shows listings within two miles, sorted nearest first. Choose a radius from half a mile to ten miles, or select exact postcode only. Distances are approximate straight-line distances, not walking or driving routes, and results can cross local-area boundaries. A partial postcode searches its district or sector.
Great Britain postcode centres are resolved through Postcodes.io. Northern Ireland searches and external-service failures use an existing mapped venue in the exact postcode where available; the search labels this approximation. If a reliable point is unavailable, results fall back to the postcode district without distances. Venues without coordinates cannot be placed within a radius unless they share the exact postcode.

Changed brands and uncertain identities.
57 explicitly discontinued restaurant-brand records are held out of current results, with their old links retained as status pages. A further 27 named venues with historical brand links remain discoverable, clearly marked “Current identity needs checking”; their old contact details, hours and facilities are withheld. These are identity checks, not claims that every physical property has permanently closed. Operator’s September 2026 brand update.
Duplicates and known closures.
We collapse duplicate names at the same location and match existing researched entries where identity is supported. Known closures from our dated South Hams audit are held out of ordinary results. Current import: 95 duplicate source records collapsed, 3 records held out, and 45 additional editorial entries retained. The Thornbury audit also combined two duplicate venue results and added Hawkes House, a café-bar recorded under a different register category. Read the detailed South Hams status notes.
Dates, geography and reuse.
FSA/FHIS snapshot: 6 November 2026. OpenStreetMap extract: 4 November 2026, 21:21 UTC, downloaded from Geofabrik. These are source snapshot dates, not confirmation that each detail was updated then. This release is a dated snapshot, not a live feed. Hygiene ratings are not reproduced; use the linked original record.
Local areas retain the register’s reporting areas. New mapped places are assigned by their coordinates using ONS local-authority boundaries, May 2025. Coastline approximations are marked. Map centres are not necessarily accessible entrances.

These compact ODbL files contain names, locations, source identifiers and mapped practical facts. Nearby settlement names are proximity hints, not postal addresses. Keys: id stable directory ID, ids merged legacy directory IDs, n name, a address, p postcode, l local-area key, c country, g source latitude/longitude, og mapped coordinates, near nearby named places and straight-line distances in metres, k listing type, e original editorial entry, o OpenStreetMap object IDs, f additional FSA IDs, d mapped detail fields, u operator-directory contact fields, s operator-directory sources, aliases source name variants and v operator-note reference, record_status a current-identity qualification. The separate archive.json contains discontinued-brand records and status sources. Missing fields are unknown. Source identifiers and the manifest provide provenance.
