A little inspiration from the book
A good pub.
A lovely day.
Choose one place to linger, then build the day around it.
Four starting ideas, with room for a change of plan. These are researched suggestions, not timed or field-tested walking routes.
01Start with the old town
Dartmouth, without a rush.
Wander the streets around the Butterwalk and Bayard’s Cove, then choose one pub that fits your day. The Cherub and Seven Stars bring old-town character; the Dartmouth Arms is close to the cove.
Allow for cobbles, steps and smaller historic rooms. Check food service before settling on your lunch stop.
02Make the crossing part of it
Across the Dart.
Use a confirmed ferry service to Kingswear and choose between the Steam Packet near the Lower Ferry and the Ship Inn higher in the village. Make the river crossing an outing in its own right.
Check the return ferry before travelling and leave a buffer. The uphill approach and upstairs seating may affect your choice.
03One village, one long lunch
Choose your creek.
Pick Dittisham, Bow Bridge or Tuckenhay as your destination. The Ferry Boat Inn, Waterman’s Arms and Maltsters Arms each put the water in the picture. Give one of them the afternoon.
These are alternative destinations, not a walking circuit. Arrange your route and return transport in advance.
04Let the sea set the pace
A little coast, a good table.
Choose Hope Cove, Torcross or Beesands for a coastal village outing, then check a table at the Hope & Anchor, Start Bay Inn or Cricket Inn. Leave room for the view and a gentle local wander.
Pick one village. Use current maps for any walk, check conditions and opening hours, and arrange a lift or taxi if you plan to drink.
